Douglas Stuart at literary festivals

Last checked: 28 October 2026

Douglas Stuart writes fiction in which love and tenderness have to survive formidable pressure. If his characters have stayed with you after the final page, a festival conversation gives you time with the novelist behind them, listening to the choices that turn a family or community into a story.

About Douglas Stuart

Stuart writes novels, short stories and essays. His stories have appeared in The New Yorker, while his essays address gender, class and conformity. Those interests also run through fiction about the expectations people face from their families and the places around them.

His debut won the Booker Prize in 2020, was a National Book Award finalist, and received recognition at the British Book Awards. A second novel followed before his return to fiction in a Hebridean setting. His work gives readers close relationships to follow alongside the pressures of masculinity and belonging.

In 2026, Picador published his third novel. Its central figure returns to an island home after art school and finds himself caught between family expectations and the search for connection. A shift from city streets to an island changes the landscape around the characters while keeping questions about love, identity and family close to the centre.

You may want to hear Stuart because a scene moved you, because you recognise the force of a family’s expectations, or because you are interested in the craft of making such intimacy on the page. Each is a generous starting point for an evening with a novelist.

Where to start with their books

Shuggie Bain

The debut follows a boy growing up in Glasgow, with addiction, poverty and the bond with his mother at the centre of the story. Begin here if you want to encounter the family relationships that first brought Stuart a wide readership.

Young Mungo

Two young men fall in love across the Protestant and Catholic divide in Glasgow’s housing estates. The novel follows their hope of escape alongside family loyalty, territorial violence and the danger of being open about who they are.

John of John

John-Calum Macleod returns from art school to the Isle of Harris, where his father’s religious expectations and his own longing for connection pull against each other. This is a starting point for readers drawn to island life, family silence and the difficulty of coming home.

What their events are like

At Hay on 23 May, Richard Coles joined Stuart on the Global Stage to discuss John of John. Masculinity, love and family secrets were among the subjects of their conversation. The novel’s return to an island home gave the two writers a story through which to approach those themes.

Plan your trip

Leave yourself room after the conversation before the next event, especially if you want to talk through a book with someone who has read it too. Stuart’s fiction can be emotionally demanding; an unhurried meal or walk afterwards may suit the visit better than filling every available slot.

If you are going alone, choose the travel plan first and keep the return details to hand. The festival guides cover the practical parts so you can settle into the session instead of watching the clock.
