Literary festival gifts

Last checked: 28 October 2026

A festival gift can begin with an early chance to choose tickets, an evening with a favourite writer or a whole weekend away. Start with the recipient’s reading interests and the dates they can travel. A membership, voucher and room booking each give something different, so choose the part of the visit they would most enjoy having arranged.

For a surprise, keep the commitment small enough that the recipient can shape the rest. Early booking helps only if someone is ready to choose events during that period. A stay needs agreed dates and a workable journey home. If those details are uncertain, give a festival voucher or plan the weekend together before reserving anything that cannot be changed.

Memberships and Friends schemes

Memberships support festival charities and can give readers earlier access to tickets or other benefits. The schemes below have different terms, booking limits and renewal details. Read the current offer before choosing, and put a gift in the recipient’s account where the festival requires it. Membership does not guarantee admission to every event they might want.

Hay Festival

Hay offers Gift Membership, with benefits including priority booking, priority queues and a printed spring programme. Membership benefits relate to Hay Festival Hay-on-Wye unless stated otherwise. Choose the level and recipient details carefully, especially if the present is intended for two people travelling together. Leave the event choices to the recipient unless you already know which conversations they want to hear.

Cheltenham Festivals

Cheltenham Festivals Membership gives access to a priority booking period before general sale, with the details depending on the scheme. A Gift Membership Voucher allows the recipient to set up the membership on their own account. Cheltenham explains that priority access does not guarantee tickets. Give the membership in time for the recipient to use the booking period, and check whether the purchase renews automatically.

Edinburgh International Book Festival

Edinburgh offers gift memberships, with advance booking and other benefits across its membership levels. Some higher levels include access to the Members Lounge. Availability and per-event ticket limits still apply. This can suit someone who enjoys choosing their own programme, but check the level’s benefits before buying. The festival’s membership team also provides a route for arranging a gift directly.

Bath Festivals

Bath’s Friends and membership options include priority booking and advance information about its programmes. Higher membership levels list specific ticket discounts. Check the current scheme against the literature, music or children’s festival that interests the recipient, and confirm the number of tickets covered. A membership and an event ticket remain separate purchases, so allow the reader time to decide what to book.

Harrogate International Festivals

Harrogate’s Silver Friends scheme includes advance programme announcements, priority booking up to a week before general sale and priority entry for unreserved seating. Some lounge benefits require a ticket for the relevant event. Check the scheme and ask the box office about arranging it for someone else instead of assuming a purchase in your own account transfers automatically to the recipient.

Oxford Literary Festival

For an Oxford present, agree a day and choose events together from the official programme and ticket information. Check the actual venue as well as the session’s start time. A conversation they have chosen can become the centre of the gift, with a meal or a stay added once travel is settled. Keep the confirmation and the festival’s exchange conditions with the recipient’s plans.

Festival gift vouchers

A voucher lets the reader choose the programme, but it still has conditions. Check what it can pay for, when it expires and whether any unused balance remains available. Put those details with the present. Do not assume that a festival voucher also covers accommodation, meals or travel, or that a voucher for one organisation will work at another venue’s box office.

Hay’s Email Gift Voucher can be emailed to a recipient and redeemed against festival tickets and products in the Hay Festival online shop. Choose the delivery details carefully if you want the email to arrive with the gift. Read the current voucher conditions before paying, especially if the recipient is unlikely to make plans straight away.

Cheltenham Festivals vouchers can be used for ticket or membership purchases. That gives the recipient a choice between a specific event and joining the membership scheme. Check the expiry and redemption terms alongside the amount you want to give. For a membership present, make clear whether the gift is a membership voucher or general festival credit.

Bath Box Office vouchers are valid for one year and can be used wholly or partly towards tickets to events it sells. Check that the desired festival event is being sold by Bath Box Office before choosing this option. Keep the voucher’s issue date with the gift so the recipient can plan within its period of validity.

Give a weekend away

A stay can turn a ticket into a longer break, but agree the nights with the recipient before booking. Begin with our festival stay guides and compare the final event with the journey back to the room. Ask about the room layout, access, check-in and luggage where those matter. Read cancellation and payment conditions for the rate you choose.

Keep tickets, travel and the room together in the plan while treating them as separate bookings. Include breakfast, parking and daily transfers in the gift’s total cost. If you are sharing the stay, agree whether everyone will attend the same sessions or meet afterwards. A base that suits one person’s final event may need another evening journey for their companion.

For an autumn or winter present, compare winter literary weekends. For a visit with more browsing between talks, explore UK book towns. A flexible plan can leave the reader room to choose events later. Check the accommodation dates again when the programme is settled instead of assuming the first room search has booked the whole trip.

Books by festival speakers

A book can make the invitation to a festival feel personal. Choose a writer the recipient already enjoys or one whose event they have picked, and check whether they own the title. Browse our author profiles for reading ideas and festival appearances, including Richard Osman, Katherine Rundell and Sandi Toksvig.

A ticket does not always include a book. Read the event description before buying a second copy, and check signing details if that matters to the gift. For a family outing, use the event’s stated age guidance instead of the broad reputation of an author. Leave enough time for a signing where one is offered before planning the train home.

When to give what

Before the programme appears, a suitable membership can give the recipient time to look ahead and access the scheme’s booking benefits. Once events are on sale, choose tickets together if you can. If the diary is uncertain, a voucher may leave more room for a later decision, provided its expiry and eligible purchases fit the recipient’s likely plans.

A room is best chosen once the essential dates and travel are agreed. If the accommodation is the surprise, make the conditions clear and give the recipient the information needed to use it. Keep confirmation emails, cancellation deadlines and required account details together. The most thoughtful gift leaves them looking forward to the festival instead of having to untangle its arrangements.
