Winter literary weekends

Last checked: 28 October 2026

A winter bookish break can be a four-day festival, two days of conversations or one afternoon built around a story you love. Choose the event first, then check the journey after the final session before deciding where to stay. Hay-on-Wye, Cambridge and Pitlochry offer different settings; a family concert in Barnes provides another way to make books part of a winter weekend.

Published dates help settle the diary, but the venue on each ticket still matters. Keep the event booking, room reservation and transport together in your plans while checking their separate conditions. A festival pass does not book a bed, and an attractive room rate does not solve a late return. Leave time for a meal, a signing if offered and the trip back to your accommodation.

Choose the length that suits the people travelling. A single performance can leave room for a shared meal and a relaxed departure. A longer programme gives more choice, but it also creates more decisions about breaks, food and the last connection home. Before buying several sessions, agree which are essential and which you would happily leave open.

Hay Festival Winter Weekend

Hay Festival Winter Weekend runs from 26 to 29 November 2026, bringing talks, music, comedy and ideas into Hay-on-Wye. The programme is published. Use the Winter Weekend guide to compare events and the official festival website for current tickets. This is separate from the main spring Hay Festival, so check that you are looking at the right programme.

The winter venues include Hay Castle and St Mary’s Church in town. Put the specific venue alongside each booking instead of planning around the spring festival site. If you choose more than one event, allow time to leave the first, take a break and reach the next entrance. Bookshop browsing can fill an interval without turning every part of the day into another reservation.

The festival’s winter travel information warns that public transport can be limited in autumn and winter. Hereford is its stated nearest railway station, twenty miles away, with an onward journey to Hay. Check the timetable for your date and the last suitable return. Do not assume that a special spring festival service will be available during the Winter Weekend.

Compare Winter Weekend stays before settling on nights. A Hay address and a Hereford or Brecon base give you different journeys at the end of the evening. Check late entry, luggage details and the exact room’s cancellation conditions. If an essential transfer needs booking, arrange it alongside the event instead of leaving it until the performance finishes.

Cambridge’s winter festival

Cambridge Literary Festival’s winter programme runs on 21 and 22 November 2026. The published line-up spans fiction, current affairs, nature, history and other subjects, with individual events across its venues. Start with the Cambridge visitor guide and follow each event to the official box office. A winter booking is distinct from the festival’s main spring edition.

Cambridge Union and the Old Divinity School are among the venues in the winter programme. Read the full venue and room name on your chosen event, especially when more than one session uses the same building. Leave a transfer margin between conversations. A familiar city name on the ticket is not enough to decide that two successive sessions can be joined comfortably.

A two-day visit can work around one essential event each day, with the remaining time left for lunch, browsing or another booking. Companions can choose different talks, but agree where to meet afterwards. If you expect to return to the accommodation during an interval, check whether the room will be available and whether luggage collection adds another trip.

Use the Cambridge stay guide to compare central venues, Regent Street and the station side of the visit. Choose by the actual property address and your final session, not just the arrival station. For travel, use the festival’s visitor information and the transport operator’s planner for the precise date and journey.

Winter Words in Pitlochry

Winter Words Festival returns to Pitlochry Festival Theatre from 18 to 21 February 2027. The 2027 festival is curated for the first time by poet, novelist and Edinburgh Makar Michael Pedersen. Its mixture of writers and performers gives you a different option from the November events. Check the official Winter Words page for the programme and booking information.

The theatre’s address is Port-Na-Craig, Pitlochry, PH16 5DR. Use the room named on each event and the theatre’s current visiting information when planning your arrival. If a literary lunch or another special event is part of the break, check its individual details before making adjacent bookings. Leave room for a meal even when the day’s programme looks tempting from beginning to end.

The previous Winter Words ran from 12 to 15 February 2026 and was curated by Alan Cumming. Those dates and that programme belong to the completed edition. For a new trip, use the published February 2027 dates and the current programme, keeping earlier event highlights separate from what you intend to book.

Before reserving a room, work out the journey from the theatre after your final conversation. Ask the property about late arrival and the features you need in the room. Check transport for the actual winter date, including any onward connection after the train. A four-day programme does not require a four-night stay: choose the sessions first and compare the nights that fit them.

Another winter event: The Snowman in Barnes

The London Children’s Literature Festival presents The Snowman Christmas Concert at 2pm on Saturday 5 December 2026. The 60-minute family performance takes place at St Mary’s Church, Church Road, Barnes, SW13 9HL, with published guidance of ages three and over. It combines Raymond Briggs’ story with narration and live classical musicians. Use the official event page for tickets and the accompanying-child conditions.

This is one afternoon instead of a multi-day festival. It can anchor a family outing or form part of a wider London stay without filling the whole weekend. Think about food, rests and the journey afterwards before adding other plans. Check the venue entrance and essential access features directly, and keep the room booking separate from the event purchase.

Making a winter weekend of it

Build the return journey into the plan from the start. Check the final suitable train or bus for your event day, then work backwards through leaving the venue and reaching the stop. If a signing or meal comes after the session, allow for it before choosing a departure. Arrange any necessary taxi and pickup point in advance, especially if the room is outside the event town.

Pack for the complete day instead of only the journey in. Keep tickets and the accommodation address available offline, bring a bag that can carry book purchases and choose clothing that suits the forecast. Ask venues about cloakrooms or luggage instead of assuming they can store a travel bag. A room break is only practical if check-in and the return route fit your interval.

For a shared trip, agree which events you will attend together and which are optional. Leave an unbooked stretch for food and a rest. If someone needs a specific room layout, bathroom or step-free entrance, ask about that exact booking before paying. Compare breakfast, transport and parking with the nightly rate so the whole stay fits the budget.

You can also make the trip a present, but choose dates with the recipient before buying details they cannot change. See literary festival gifts for memberships, vouchers and planning a stay together. For more browsing between conversations, compare UK book towns and the practical rail planning guide.
