About Meera Syal
Syal’s career spans novels, screenplays, comedy and theatre. Anita and Me is a national curriculum text, while many readers also know her as a writer and performer in Goodness Gracious Me. Her screenwriting includes Bhaji on the Beach and work on the BBC series My Sister Wife. The play Generation Next was included in the National Theatre’s Connections programme for young people in 2012.
Her memoir Vigilauntie was published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson in September 2026. It uses remarks that affected her life to organise the story. The account includes her working life as an actress and writer, and the response to the idea that became the sketch series. For someone who knows the fiction, hearing that first-person voice offers another way of meeting the storyteller.
You do not need to have followed every part of that career to enjoy a literary conversation. A scene from a novel or a memory of a performance can be your own point of connection. The memoir adds the voice behind those projects to the characters through which readers and viewers may first have known her.
Where to start with their books
Anita and Me
Syal’s first novel is also the national curriculum text through which many readers encounter her writing. It is an established starting point if your interest began with her memoir or performance work and you would like to meet the novelist as well.
Life Isn’t All Ha Ha Hee Hee
Three friends find their choices about marriage, work and family put under pressure. This novel is a choice for readers interested in the gaps between the lives people present to one another and the truths a friendship may have to face.
The House of Hidden Mothers
Shyama wants a child, while Mala dreams of escaping a constricting marriage in India. Their meeting links two women’s hopes and the choices around them. Try it if you want a story in which family, friendship and longing reach across different lives.

Plan your trip
For a visit with a friend, share the piece of writing that first made you want to hear her: a novel, a screenplay or something you watched together. You need not arrive with the same reading history to enjoy talking about the conversation afterwards.
Build the day around the author interview you have chosen, with time for a meal or a quieter pause afterwards. If you want a book included with a ticket or hope to attend a signing, ask the box office about the details before buying. The guides below cover the festival base and accommodation.
