Tim Spector at UK literary festivals
Last checked: 28 October 2026
Tim Spector writes about food with the curiosity of a scientist and a reader’s appetite for explanation. If his books have made you look again at something in your kitchen, a festival conversation offers time to hear the ideas behind the writing and share that curiosity with other readers.

About Tim Spector
Spector is Professor of Epidemiology at King’s College London and scientific co-founder of ZOE. His books bring questions about nutrition and the gut microbiome to a general readership, alongside a practical cookery strand. A food lover and a popular-science reader can therefore arrive at the same session with different reasons to listen.
Ferment: The Life-Changing Power of Microbes was first published by Jonathan Cape in September 2025, with the Vintage paperback following in June 2026. It combines explanation with information about buying and making fermented foods. Familiar food and drink provide a way into the microbial world without requiring readers to begin with specialist vocabulary.
Jonathan Cape published Good Mood Food on 22 October 2026. This followed the hardback and paperback editions of the fermentation book, adding another title to a working life that moves between explanation and the food people make at home.
For a festival reader, the pleasure can begin with a question as ordinary as what is happening in a loaf or a jar. You might enjoy the practical side of making food, or want to hear how scientific ideas become readable chapters. Bring that interest to the conversation and let the books offer a route into a subject you want to understand better.
Where to start with their books
The Diet Myth
Spector explores why people can respond differently to food, placing gut microbes at the centre of his explanation. Start here if the scientific questions behind everyday eating are what first made you curious about his work.
Spoon-Fed
Short chapters question familiar claims about breakfast, calories, coffee and other parts of everyday eating. It is a starting point for readers who like a popular-science book built around questions they have already encountered at the kitchen table.
Food for Life
This broad guide explains the science of eating well, bringing nutritional questions together for general readers. Choose it for the explanatory side of the writing before moving to the companion cookbook and trying recipes at home.
The Food for Life Cookbook
More than one hundred recipes created with ZOE turn the food-writing strand towards the kitchen, with quick meals, store-cupboard ideas and dishes to share. This is the route for a reader whose next step is cooking as well as understanding the science.

What their events are like
At Hay on 25 May, Gaby Huddart joined him on the Discovery Stage for Fermentation: Food to Put You in a Good Mood. The conversation ranged from sauerkraut and kimchi to sourdough and coffee. Those everyday examples gave listeners recognisable things to think about as microbes and fermentation entered the discussion. The sessions were opportunities to hear a writer explain a subject, with the conversation itself at the heart of the outing.
Where to see them next

Plan your trip
For a shared food-writing trip, go with someone who enjoys comparing what they read and cook. Choose one question from the book before leaving home, then leave room for a meal afterwards to talk about what caught your attention.
If you want to see food being made, choose a session that explicitly includes a demonstration; a conversation is a different pleasure. Use the festival guide to plan travel and an overnight base, and keep any personal health questions for your own clinician.
