Where to stay for Dartmouth Book Festival

Find a room for festival week ↗

Last checked: 28 October 2026

Choose your Dartmouth Book Festival accommodation around the venue and the return after your final event. The festival is based at The Flavel, Flavel Place, Dartmouth TQ6 9ND.

The previous edition took place from 18 to 20 September 2026. Exact dates for the next edition haven’t been announced yet.

There are three bases to consider: Dartmouth itself, Kingswear across the river and Totnes, which has the nearest national railway station. Each involves a different kind of journey.

A Dartmouth address may let you organise the visit around the town. Kingswear needs a ferry plan. Totnes needs an onward bus or taxi connection, with the official visitor information placing it approximately 14 miles from Dartmouth.

Quick answers

Staying in Dartmouth

Start with the property’s full address and route to the Flavel. A broad town description is less helpful than the journey you will make.

If you hope to walk, check the route in both directions. Consider your pace, luggage and whether you want to return to the room between sessions.

A central stay can give you more freedom during the day, but ask about check-in before depending on a room being available before your first event.

For an evening return, check late entry. A door code, key collection or reception instruction is easier to organise before arrival.

If you drive, ask about parking and unloading separately. A convenient place to leave luggage is not necessarily where the car can stay overnight.

Choose a property that supports the visit you want. Location matters, but so do access, room layout and booking conditions you understand.

Kingswear as a base

Kingswear is across the river from Dartmouth. If you stay there, the ferry becomes part of the festival journey.

Check the timetable for your dates before booking accommodation. Compare the final crossing with the end of the last event you want to attend.

Include the route from the property to the ferry landing. That matters with luggage, in poor weather or if walking is difficult.

Do not assume that a convenient daytime crossing gives you an equally straightforward evening return. Confirm operating hours with the ferry operator.

The seasonal steam railway also reaches Kingswear. Check its actual running dates and timetable if it forms part of arrival.

A Kingswear stay can work well when crossings fit your programme. Decide from the complete journey instead of the view on a booking-site map.

Totnes as a base

Totnes is the nearest national railway station in Dartmouth’s official visitor information. It is approximately 14 miles from Dartmouth, with a bus or taxi needed for the onward journey.

A Totnes stay may suit someone arriving by rail or combining the festival with other plans. Compare the daily transfer before deciding it is the right base.

Check the first journey into Dartmouth and the return after the final session. A room that suits your train arrival may be less convenient for evening events.

If using taxis, ask an operator about the dates and times. Find out how to reserve and where collection will take place.

If using buses, check the current timetable and allow a margin before the first event. Include transport in the total cost: a lower room rate can become less attractive once repeated transfers are added.

Arriving by train

Plan beyond Totnes station. Decide whether you will go first to accommodation or directly to the festival.

If the event begins before check-in, ask about leaving luggage. Confirm the answer before relying on it.

For a direct station-to-venue taxi, give the operator the full Flavel address and arrival details. Mention access or luggage needs.

For the return, work from the event’s finish time and include the transfer to Totnes before choosing a train.

An overnight stay may let you attend a later event without rushing for a connection. Compare that comfort with the full same-day journey.

Keep accommodation and transport contacts with your tickets so that a delay is easier to manage.

Driving and parking

Dartmouth’s visitor information highlights narrow streets and limited parking. Ask the property for arrival instructions instead of improvising when you reach town.

Check whether parking is included, charged separately or needs reserving. Find out whether it is at the property or elsewhere.

Ask about unloading if you have luggage or mobility requirements. You may need a different plan for arrival from overnight parking.

The town has a park-and-ride site at the top of town. Check current operating times before making it essential to your visit.

If staying outside the centre, consider how you will reach the venue each day and return after an evening event.

Choose the room and parking plan together. Confirm both before paying for a booking that depends on having the car nearby.

How many nights?

Wait for the next programme before deciding the length of your stay, unless accommodation terms suit a change of plan.

A single night may be enough for events on adjacent days. A longer booking gives more flexibility if interests are spread across the programme.

Check the first session’s time. An early event may make arrival the previous evening more comfortable.

For the final day, compare checkout, luggage and the last event. You may prefer to travel afterwards or stay another night.

If reserving before dates are announced, read the cancellation deadline carefully and record it somewhere you will see. Book the visit that fits your plans instead of assuming you need every day.

Access and the property

Ask about the room and route to it. Describe the access needed from street or parking area to bedroom and bathroom.

Check steps, lifts, entrances and dining areas. If bathroom layout matters, ask a specific question.

For Kingswear, include the ferry and routes to both landings. For Totnes, include the vehicle and pickup.

The Flavel describes a ramp, lift and wheelchair seating, but accommodation needs a separate enquiry.

Confirm essential details before booking. A general accessibility description may not answer the questions that determine whether the stay is comfortable. Keep written confirmation of anything on which the visit depends.

Meals and the evening plan

Compare breakfast times with your first event and transport connection. Ask about alternatives if you need to leave early.

Check what the room price includes. For self-catering, look at the facilities in the actual unit.

Plan dinner with the timetable in front of you. Leave enough time to eat and reach the venue.

If the evening ends with a ferry, bus or taxi, decide whether eating beforehand makes the return simpler.

Contact the provider about dietary requirements that need preparation. A direct answer helps more than an assumption based on a sample menu. If companions attend different sessions, agree a meal or meeting point beforehand.

Questions about your stay

What should I confirm?

Check the address, room type, full price and cancellation conditions. Confirm arrival, luggage and late-entry details where they affect the programme.

How do I depart?

Make sure the journey after the final event is settled, including a ferry or onward transfer.

Look through departure day too: checkout, the last session, collecting belongings and the train or drive home should fit comfortably.

Keep accommodation and transport contacts together. Return to the Dartmouth festival guide for programme links, access and official travel information.
